Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts: plan your visit
Explore contemporary art in Amman with this National Gallery guide, including published hours, accessibility checks and ideas for a Luwaibdeh visit.
The Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts adds contemporary creativity to an Amman trip often dominated by ancient monuments. Make it the anchor of a relaxed art outing: choose a few works to spend time with, then leave space to explore the surrounding neighbourhood.
What kind of art will you find?
The gallery describes its permanent collection as more than 3,000 contemporary artworks from the developing world. Its online catalogue groups artists by country, including Jordan, Palestine, Iraq and countries across several continents. This is a collection with an international scope, rather than a survey limited to Jordanian artists. Source: the gallery's permanent collection.
Browse that catalogue before travelling if you want a starting point, but do not assume every work online is currently on the walls. Ask staff which exhibitions and collection displays are open that day.
Hours, location and access
The official visitor page places the gallery on Husi Fareez Street in Al-Luwaibdeh. When checked, it listed opening hours of 9am–5pm, with Tuesday, Friday and official-holiday closures. It listed a 7 JD admission category for non-Jordanians and residents; confirm the applicable rate when booking. Park and restaurant hours differ from gallery hours, so an open café does not establish that the exhibitions are open. Source: official visitor information.
The same page describes wheelchair ramps with staff assistance and provides a form to arrange guided group visits. Contact the gallery with your access requirements and wait for confirmation if requesting a tour. A submitted form alone is not a confirmed booking.
A simple way to enjoy the galleries
Our suggested approach is to spend the first few minutes looking without taking photographs. Choose one work that immediately interests you and another you find puzzling. Read the labels and compare how the materials, title or date affect your first impression.
For families, give everyone a small task: find a colour that changes the mood of a picture, or describe an artwork without naming the subject. Keep the activity conversational and respect other visitors' space. Ask staff about photography before using a camera.
Allow roughly 90 minutes to two hours as an editorial planning estimate, with extra time for any guided activity. You do not need to finish every room to have a worthwhile visit.
Build a Luwaibdeh outing around it
Put the gallery first and keep a meal or neighbourhood walk flexible afterward. Save the exact location for your driver and agree on a return plan if needed; our Jordan transport guide explains the main options.
For a different museum theme, compare this visit with the Jordan Museum. Choose art for an afternoon of looking and interpretation, or archaeology for a broader material-history introduction. Pairing either with a leisurely meal from our Jordanian food guide leaves room to enjoy Amman beyond a checklist.
